In 1996, I permanently borrowed a first edition of McPherson’s Hue and Cry from the Coralville Public Library in Iowa. I did so for three reasons. (1) The book hadn’t been checked out in years and therefore I decided that the people of Coralville had lost the right to it. (2) Hue and Cry, at that time, as a result of an obscure publishing feud, was incredibly hard to find. (3) The book contained the story “Gold Coast,” arguably McPherson’s most enduring example of his infinitely open heart.

McPherson wouldn’t have approved. Had I confessed, he’d have rummaged his house for a precious copy and given it to me immediately, and yet he might have appreciated the human contradiction of my simultaneously celebrating a book’s expansive benevolence while hoarding it for myself.

If I had any talent for memorizing, which I don’t, I’d like to learn “Gold Coast” by heart so I could recite it to myself in bookless moments like a prayer. It’s the story of a friendship between an old Irish janitor and a young writer, and opens with this line:
